Thinking back to my childhood, one of my favorite young adult books was Watership Down.
I just absolutely feel in love with this book.
Apparently, the author wrote the book to entertain his daughters at bedtime. How sweet is that!
I just felt such a connection to these little rabbits! I wanted to go on the adventure with them! I think what I appreciated about the book as well was that everything didn't always turn out okay. However, what that did for me was show how much sweeter the victories were.
This was another book that actually dealt with death as well. It was amazing to me then, as it still is now, that the author let some of the characters die. The author was so graceful in the way in which he navigated all of the death scenes -- from the violence in battle to the death from old age. It was all so very beautiful.
I would definitely have my niece read this book once she gets a little bit older.
